WATERLOO – Alfred Sawall, 91, of Waterloo, NY, passed away peacefully in his sleep Saturday (September 14, 2024) at his home with his loving family by his side.
Family and friends may call from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. Saturday (Sept. 21) at Calvary Lutheran Church, 2414 Rt. 414, Waterloo, NY, 13165. Following the calling hour, the memorial service will be 11 a.m. at the church. Rev. William Dorow, pastor of the church, will officiate. Burial will be 11 a.m. Tuesday (Sept. 24) at Maple Grove Cemetery, Waterloo, NY.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be sent to Calvary Lutheran Church.
Alfred was born May 23, 1933, in Mariental, Bessarabia, Romania, the son of Rudolf and Lydia Metze Sawall. In 1952 he and his family moved from Germany to Colorado, then moved to New Jersey where he met his wife. In 1957 the Sawall family moved from New Jersey to Waterloo to make their home. He was a U. S. Army Korean War veteran serving from 1953 to 1955. Al retired after 30 years of employment with Goulds Pumps in Seneca Falls, NY. He was a longtime member of Calvary Lutheran Church. Al and his wife, Ida, were members of the Holiday Rambler Club and loved traveling in their motorhome. He was an avid fisherman and boater. Al had many hobby interests including woodworking, winemaking, sausage making, and was famous for his homemade Cherry Brandy. He was a member of the Seneca Falls Elks Club and the Germanian Lodge.
He is survived by his loving wife with whom he celebrated their 69th wedding anniversary, Ida Waelz Sawall; children Irene (David) Barber, Gary (Mary) Sawall both of Seneca Falls, NY, Alice (John) Moses of Red Creek, NY, and Nancy (Daniel) Gilbo of Waterloo, NY; ten grandchildren; nineteen great-grandchildren; sisters Erna Spiegelberg of Germantown, WI and Irma (Fred) Delamarter of Ventura, CA; brother Wilhelm "Bill" Sawall of Wappinger Falls, NY; and many nieces and nephews.
Alfred was predeceased by his parents; daughter Rita Sawall; grandson Randy Gilbo; brothers Artur and Albert Sawall; nieces Inge Burgess and Janet Waelz; and nephew Dieter Sawall.
