A Life of Travel and Adventure…
VARICK — Dennis James Romeo, 71, passed away unexpectedly Monday (September 2, 2024) with his loving partner by his side in Waterloo, NY.
In keeping with Dennis' wishes, there will be no calling hours or service. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St Jude Children's Research Hospital at stjude.org.
Dennis was born on July 16, 1953 in Geneva, NY, the son of Donald and Veronica Pyzik Romeo. He was a 1971 graduate of Mynderse Academy and went on to receive a Bachelor's Degree in Arts and Journalism at SUNY New Paltz in the Catskills, NY. Dennis also studied at Tuebingen University in Germany and served in the Coast Guard.
After living in Seattle, Washington during the 1980s, he began a lifetime of international travel and adventure, living in Germany, Italy, France and Australia. His two boys, Daniel and Sebastian were born in Berlin, and for a number of years Dennis lived between Germany and Italy.
Upon his return to Berlin, he became Founder and Publisher of his own magazine 'International Community' - a publication initially designed for those in the German Business Community, using English as the lingua franca. However, once the German capital moved to Berlin, the magazine launched its 'Business meets Diplomats' suite of events. These popular soirees were hosted at interesting locations around Berlin, and were designed to bring the diplomatic and business communities together, during a unique period post fall of the Berlin wall.
Despite the demands of running his own publication, family was always important to Dennis. Every year he would bring his two sons back to enjoy the summer in the Finger Lakes, just as he had experienced as a child.
Dennis moved to Australia in the early 2000s and continued to enjoy a creative but quieter life in Perth, Western Australia.
Dennis is survived by his life partner, Debra Lunt of Perth, AU; his sons Sebastian Romeo of London, ENG and Daniel Romeo of Berlin, DE; many cousins in the United States; and dear friends from around the world, including Roger Mahoney of Waterloo, NY.
He was predeceased by his parents.
